Golden Peach’s Reading China Campaign

Golden Peach Publishing, a transcontinental publishing house, has executed plans in our Reading China campaign for a multi-series book launch featuring titles that sweep across a broad spectrum of subjects relating to China. All series are set for release in both China and America.

GPP’s aim in publishing quality bilingual and English language books is to bridge the gap between the Eastern and Western worlds through enhanced knowledge and greater understanding. Over twenty exciting titles will initiate an exploration into Chinese culture, history, literature, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The books will be divided into three series -- one for young readers and two for adult readers -- as follows:

Golden Peach Enchanted Tales of China Series

The Enchanted Tales of China series collects and retells the most treasured, timeless Chinese myths, legends and folktales that have captured hearts and imaginations for over a thousand years. Each story is retold in English for general Western readers interested in Asian cultures and literature, catered  to a multicultural and multi-age level audience.

For older readers it comes in an English young adult novel format. Golden Peach enlists Chinese American authors to adapt the most celebrated epic novels in classical Chinese literature into multi-book series for young adult English readers. The books will feature stunning cover art that fuses elements of classical Chinese art with elements of modern American comic art. The novels will be written in a style that appeals to young adults, accentuating the mythical, fantasy aspects and martial-arts action while still preserving the integrity of the original story.

With the American media abuzz with news of Steven Spielberg’s Monkey King movie, and the current box office hit The Forbidden Kingdom featuring the Monkey King, Golden Peach has selected Journey to the West as the first series slated for adaptation. The first title in the Monkey King Series – The Monkey King and the Book of Death, has already been published, and four more titles in the series will follow.

Also coming up in this format is a story inspired by an ancient Chinese tale, called The Princess Pearl, a series of three novels about a water fairy-princess trying to be the first girl jumping over the mighty Dragon Arch in the roaring Yellow River to become a dragon.

For younger age group readers, exquisite Chinese legends and folktales are retold in a bilingual, leveled reader format, with the Chinese text in the bottom of pages as a supplement for readers who can read Chinese or wish to learn more of the language.

These stories are loosely leveled based on their abilities to understand the culture and history, with the levels color coded for easy recognitions -- the orange level is mostly for teenage readers and the green level is more for younger children.

Additionally, detailed notes on Chinese culture in the back will help enhance readers’ understanding of the stories as well as of their historical and social backgrounds, while full color illustrations highlight important scenes.

Currently, 12 titles for the younger readers have been published. 6 are in the Orange Level catering to teenage readers:

The Girl Who Cried on the Great Wall

Cowherd Boy and Weaver Girl

The Girl Who Flew to the Moon

The Butterfly Lovers

Lotus Lantern

Legend of the White Snake

6 titles are in the Green Level for younger children:

The Mouse Wedding I: Finding a Groom

The Mouse Wedding II:Groom Found!

The Dragon Pearl

The Bird that Played Old

The Gold Scissors

The Carpet that Disappeared

Golden Peach Notable Figures in Chinese History

Books in this series are English translations and adaptations works by or about figures of historical significance in China.  The titles that fall into this series will include memoirs, collected works, and biographies.

  •  China: My Dream, My Love is the first English language translation of Eva Siao’s memoirs, originally published in 1990.  Previous editions enjoyed multiple printings for nearly a decade in her native German and in Chinese.  Originally of German-Jewish descent, Eva recounts the story of her marriage to Chinese poet and revolutionary, Emi Siao.
  • Love in China celebrates the half-century long marriage of Professor Manting Pu and Professor Dezhen Tao through an annotated collection of their major scholarly writings. Their profound love was instrumental in shaping their professional careers as the founding authorities of two academic fields (children’s literature and Eastern literature) in China.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine and Notable Figures in Chinese History titles will arrive soon!
